WHO WE ARE CZECH REPUBLIC

Who we are CZ

The Czech Republic is a small country in the middle of Europe and it consists of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. It borders on Poland, Slovakia, Austria and Germany. Our country has ten million inhabitants. The capital city of the Czech Republic is Prague. There is the Prague Castle, where president lives.
Every Czech is different from another, but with we have a lot of same characteristics. A typical Czech is social, kind, talkative, solidary and very helpful, however someone is invidious, unfair and doesn’t work too hard. What are the most common stereotypes about us? We like going to the pub, having a rest, not working very much or going to shops all the time. On the other hand there are worcoholics, successful people who started their businesses after the Velvet Revolution 1989. They are hardworking, willing to risk, brave and many of them rich. Not many Czech people are religious believers, but old people go to church every Sunday. They like going to nature or seeing sights, because the Czech Republic has them
a lot.
And now something about typical Czech family (Petr and Jana Novak with children Anna and Jakub). It is usually a mother, father and mostly two or three children. When parents leave to work, children go to school and they arrive home in the afternoon at about two o’clock. Then they go out or they must learn. Parents arrive at home in the evening. They are tired and sleepy. But some parents have much energy and hence the go to pub or visit heir friends.
We have different hobbies, but a lot of Czechs have a cottage, especially if they live in a town flat. There they grill sausages with friends or they devote time to gardening. Every weekend there are traffic jams on the way to the country and back.
The Czech Republic doesn’t have a sea that is why our people travel to the seaside with beaches, sun and hot weather. In the sea they like swimming, water-skiing and diving and they like sunbathing too. Czechs travel to Italy, Spain, Greece and Croatia. The Austrian Alps are popular with skiers in winter.
In our country most popular sports are: football (Petr Cech, goalkeeper) and ice hockey (Jaromir Jagr, forward). Czechs enjoy cycling, canoeing in summer on rivers, playing different games. But many people are just passionate TV sports fans which is a pity.
Who are Czech celebrities in our opinion? We like film and music, so they are from this area. Marketa Irglova - she is twenty years old. She plays in the film- Once with Glen Hansard. She got an Oscar for the song Falling Slowly this year. Karel Gott -the most popular singer in the Czech Republic. Jan Sverak – a film director, he produced the film Kolja. This film won an Oscar too.
Typical Czech cuisine describes the country as well. Well-known Czech meals are: sirloin, sauerkraut, dumplings and pork, goulash, soups, sweet dumplings; they are not very healthy, but delicious. Here they also make unique drinks. And these are: Becherovka, slivovice and non alcoholic Kofola. We mustn´t forget about the beer. Czechs drink out very much beer. There are a lot of breweries, which are worldwide known, such as Pilsner or Budweiser.
Foreigners who visit our republic can buy nice souvenirs. Cut glass, Carlsbad wafers, Becherovka, dolls in folk costume and many others.
We have two big festivals Christmas and Easter. Christmas is the celebration of Jesus´s birth. At Christmas all Czechs buy Xmas tree and carp. We decorated the Xmas tree with many sweets and fairy lights. Today is a habit to decorate it to only one colour. On the Xmas Eve, which is 24th December, we fry the carp and do potato salad. After this dinner we wait for Baby Jesus who brings presents and unpack them under the Xmas tree and spend a nice evening with a family. Easter it the time, when we evoke the death of Jesus. All girls paint and decorate boiled or blown out eggs and the boys must prepare plaited willow cane. It is a thing made of fresh willow sticks. On Monday morning the boys start chasing the girls because they want to whip them and they want eggs, sweets or money. It is believed that it keeps them healthy. Traditions are strong in the country, modern things spread faster in towns.
We like our country, its variety of landscape and people. We like it because we were born here and friends or close people are with us.
